Wind, Whales and Wine

The Hermanus Whale festival prides itself on being the best land based whale watching experience in the world, and it is. With 123 in Walker Bay at the moment, you're sure to see them. They're so close to the Old Harbour, you can hear them breathing. But we took it to another level, literally. Evan Austin is a pilot out in Stanford, as passionate about whales as he is about flying. Racing down the gravel runway, between budding vineyards and pincushion proteas, we launched over the farm before floating over our first mom and calf at sea. Then across to another one breaching, its calf nervously watching, as they are never separated. Everywhere, another mom and calf. Next a low flypast the centre of town, skimming over Lee and Charmaine broadcasting from the Kfm van. Returning to land seemed surreal, with no difference seen between farm roads and our runway. Idling up to the hangar, Peter and Jami poured us a cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc from their farm. Its the only wine cellar in the world that is inside an aeroplane hangar! Looking forward to the next Jacksons Pinotage vintage after tasting a sample from his new Hungarian Oak barrels. I don't think days can get better than this...
