Up on the Roof - Cape Town Stadium

A few years back I filmed the weekly progress at Cape Town Stadium - from blowing up the rocks for foundations to securing the cables and raising the roof. What a jol to be involved and watch the games being played there! So now theres a couple of bolts loose - big deal. With the kind of challenges that were routinely overcome on a daily basis, it'll be sorted...there're some clever okes out there...might cost a bit though...

The Claw

Jeez - these okes go all out! Looks like they're testing their smoke machine down in Noordhoek - can't see a thing through this Irish mist!!! But Cape Towns clear, hot and ready to get hotter - nearly 5000 people behind the scenes to pull off a show like this - and then of course theres the band...

Cape Town Central

Sometimes we go looking for the stories - other times they come to us...

Discounted Body Armour

So we laughed long and lot at the bargain bin on the way to the game... English and French merchandise at reduced prices after they'd bombed out of our World Cup. However, on our return, I couldn't avoid noticing the drastically reduced Argentina stock, after losing 4 nil...
You'll find it next to the German branded bullet proof vests - vot vere zey sinking?

Cape Town Fan Walk

Cape Town is wet, dull and cold in winter...if you believe that, you'll believe the stuff they wrote about South Africa before the World Cup. Heres a 3rd July photo from the middle of winter, as thousands take to the streets to celebrate hosting the event in South Africa - you should have been here...

Make the circle bigger!

More creativity than you can shake a stick at, the Fan Walk to the game comes up with characters from around the world. Even if you don't have a ticket to the match, join the march to the Cape Town Stadium for the time of your life!

Swiss beat Spain

Wild celebrations in a Swiss sort of way, with a victory against the odds.
Welcome to Cape Town! Enjoy the wine, hospitality and crazy locals that just won't leave you alone...

Stadium Security

Brutal smiles and frivolous frisking - security at the Cape Town Stadium did the job in the friendliest possible way - thanks to all of them for the long hours they're putting in - good luck over the next 6 weeks - so far it's been a jol! (And my Bafana gear is underneath my Argentina kit...)

Cape Town Fan Walk

65 000 people poured out onto the streets of Cape Town immediately after the final whistle - the Inner City shuttle busses left every few minutes, but most opted to celebrate the clear evening with a slow walk back to the train station via the Fan Walk or Waterfront detour. Hey, can't we keep this 'happy bubble' going? Its like an African 'Never Neverland' - Somewhere over the Rainbow Nation...

France vs Uruguay - Cape Town Stadium

A packed Cape Town Stadium celebrates their first World Cup Match! Everything worked perfectly, although the teams seemed too nervous to play - ja bru, us Vuvu-zealots can be a bit intimidating... Viva Vuvu Viva!!!

Public Transport to World Cup Games

Vat die Trein!!! There can't be a better way to go to the game, than to catch the train from Fish Hoek. Its often only a few meters from the ocean, you can check out the whales, in season, and the surfing every day. On a soccer day, each station gradually loads more supporters as we get closer to the City - by the time you reach Cape Town, its a full on crescendo of noise and cheering, ready for the fan walk to the game! And if you've got a match ticket - its a free ride...

CT Airport - Bus to Cape Town

Getting a first hand experience of being a tourist in our City, I headed off to Cape Town International Airport, to check out the new MyCiTi Shuttle Bus service into Town. It's R50($7)and takes about 15 minutes depending on traffic. Its clean, safe and the whole system works well - but its the people that make it. They're all in such a festive World Cup vibe - "Can you feel it, Its here!!" If I've got to pick up or drop off anyone from the airport in future, its so much easier to use the MyCiTi bus Station in the Centre of Town. Check out the video to see how it works!

Wheel of Excellence

Just in from Paris, the new Wheel of Excellence is at the Convention Centre entrance to the V&A Waterfront. R50 for kids and R80 for adults, you rotate 4 times for about 15 minutes, checking out the Waterfront, our new Stadium, and Table mountain on a clear day. This isn't the Landbouskou style one thats been on circuit for 50 years, where it creaks and jams at the top, giving you a close-up look at the rusted bolt and peeling paintwork...this has got TV's, air con and its 6 seater cabin is sealed from the elements - it can run in 80Km/h winds. You're 50 meters high when you stop at the top - they've got a 150M one in Singapore and are building the Worlds biggest in Beijing - 210 Meters! Check out Cape Towns while you're here, the views are fantastic!

If you build it..

...they will come. If you haven't booked your tickets, its probably too late. The most beautiful Cape Town Stadium, with the sea mist starting to cool things down. Two goal posts, a ball, players and 68 000 fans is all it needs. World Cup - hurry up already!!!
