Heading into winter down south, swells arrive with strong winds, but spring is in the North, and the complete opposite. With a few days to hang out till our transfer home, we caught the public ferries around Istanbul, checking out the City. You learn stuff - normally on a flat day, I'd be thumbing through surf magazine back issues - 'Renos great Sunset drop' or 'Danes first lay-forward' - but I don't read Turkish...Everywhere you look, tulips are popping up. And every local is keen to share that they originated in Turkey - not Holland... more than 400 years ago. Trading was massive, with breweries and carriages being offered for a single bulb and markets were buzzing with the news of a possible black flower. Spring, on the day we went up the Golden Horn to Eyup, was a blistering 8 degrees - but the tulips showed summer was round the corner....
