Years ago, we took the drive from Berkshire down to mates in Kent, not realising that there were highways. The map book we'd found was in a dusty study, 60 years old, and only showed the farm roads. By the time we drove through the stream towards their house, it was midnight. We followed the tractor tracks, but eventually the Vauxhaull overheated due to 6 foot high barley grass clogging the radiator. Lost in the field, unable to open the door due to the densely packed stalks, I slid out of the window, climbed onto the roof and admired the stars. In the half moonlight, seeing my path of destruction thorough their pre harvest field, you could understand where farmers got the idea that aliens created crop circles. South Africans might lose direction, aliens might draw patterns - but none are quite so crazy as the farmers themselves at baling time...
