Paddle out for David Lilienfeld

I didn't know David, but went to honour the fallen 'Warrior'. The hundreds that paddled out felt that connection with him, a shared passion for the ocean, the waves, the life, friends, the dangers - and the words from his Dad and brother confirmed that we would have connected immediately, had I had the opportunity. Legions of close friends wrote of their good times together, on the Kaaimans, on travels and in contests around the world. A lover of everything in life and a reminder that we only have a short time to fully live it. His brother said how stoked Dave would have been to see us all there, the tribe with that beautiful connection. And his dad told us to get back out there - back into the sea.
So we paddled out with them, cried, screamed together, splashed water, stoked the flames with fresh flowers and damp paper notes and sent Dave to heaven.

  1. Emotional, sensual and touching...for once there were no strangers in the water, no sullen looks or indifference, just a sense of togetherness that's rarely experienced. Even the elements were sombre; mournful - from the still mist to the oily sea.

A most touching send-off to a place where the offshore always blows...
