NSRI Boats and Volunteers search for the body of a missing swimmer, attacked by a shark, off Fish Hoek beach. Our thoughts are for his family and friends over this tragic time. Howling onshore conditions are making the search difficult. Shark activity has been greater in False Bay over the past few weeks, with regular sightings. Thanks to Shark spotters for continual vigilance, flag systems and sirens. There will always be sharks in the water, and we are free to choose if we want to swim, dive or surf - the Spotters merely allow us to make a more informed choice. The debate will be re opened about nets ( expensive, by catch, storm damage), shooting the rogue shark, and heightened fear of sharks. Previous weeks have seen thousands swimming in False Bay, with regular shark sightings. We are not their prey.
After going through the pro's and cons, my take is that the 'shark pod' is the most effective way of discouraging an inquisitive shark, should you have the money and wish to wear one. They are standard kit for surfers in river mouths in Eastern Cape and Transkei. I am as concerned about the possibility of an attack on myself or family as everyone else, but cannot allow todays tragedy to keep us from going back into the water.

awful but true - we feed them along the shore line with the cage divers. Sharks are like dogs - once fed - they come back for more. Could be a random shark attack - heard shark wasnt tagged??? But normal for this time of the year - I say stop the cage dives - stop throwing meat to the sharks - they will come back for more because they know that they will get food. Like any animal including us we all need to eat. Just awful when it affects us and our loved ones. Condolenscences to his family and especially his wife.
